The fort is home to part of the Army's 25th Infantry Division. Surrounding the post are a number of residential neighborhoods and spectacular natural scenery. Great homes near Ft. Wainwright include Hamilton Acres, one of the older neighborhoods in Fairbanks with quite a few homes built between 1940 and 1969. Fairbanks is perfect for nature lovers. The northern lights can be witnessed on many nights. The Tanana Flats of bogs and marshes borders the city, and the Alaska Range can be viewed on clear days. To the north is the Creamers Field Migratory Waterfowl Refuge. For sports fans, the city has two teams in the Alaska summer baseball league. UAF also has several collegiate teams, including hockey and basketball. Yearly events include the World Ice Art Championships, the Golden Days Parade, and the Tanana Valley State Fair.
